[USA] ‘Christmas Terror Plan’ Subdued By Korean Air-Steward

Obama’s personally-signed letter commends the “heroic action”

Korean-American Richard Cho, a native of Chicago, has been identified as the air steward who helped to subdue the man who attempted to set off a bomb on a Northwest Airline passenger plane as it neared Detroit Airport last Christmas morning. Cho was also said to have helped extinguish the fire that subsequently broke out.

Cho’s father, Mr Hee-jang Cho (aged 70), said in a telephone interview with Yonhap news on March 8 that Cho received a personal letter on February 5 from American president Barack Obama, who expressed his gratitude toward Cho’s “heroic actions”.

In the letter, Obama wrote, “As President, I have no more important responsibility than keeping the American people safe,” while adding that “Americans will forever remember the swift and heroic actions of passengers and crew , which were critical to saving lives and protecting our Nation. … I am grateful for your dedication, and for the courage of all who defend our country at home and around the world.”

Last month, Cho was invited to Atlanta to visit the headquarters of Delta Airlines, which merged with Northwest Airlines. The CEO of Delta Airlines then delivered this letter to Cho.

At age 7, Cho migrated to Chicago with his parents and graduated from a high school in Schaumburg, a village in northwestern Chicago. He then majored in politics and sociology at Iowa State University and joined Northwest Airlines as a flight attendant after graduation. On Christmas morning last year, on the Northwest Airlines passenger flight from Nigeria [Nigeria was mentioned in the original Korean text, but I think it should be Amsterdam] to Detroit flight 253, Al-Qaeda member Umar Farouk Abdulmuttalab shocked passengers as his attempt to detonate a bomb was thwarted during the flight’s landing descent into Detroit.

Director Jasper Schuringa from the Netherlands had heard something that sounded like a firecracker, following which he saw smoke rising up. He then jumped up from his seat to subdue the alleged terrorist, thus helping to prevent a terror attack on the plane. Both Cho and Schuringa subdued the alleged terrorist together, after which they promptly and calmly used four fire extinguishers from the plane to put out the flames from the blanket which was used to cover the explosive, thus averting a potentially disastrous situation and saving the lives of the 278 passengers on board.

美 ‘성탄절 테러 기도’ 한인 승무원이 제압했다

오바마 “영웅적 행동” 감사의 친서보내

지난해 성탄절 아침 미국 디트로이트 공항 상공에서 발생한 노스웨스트항공 소속 여객기 폭탄테러기도 사건 당시 범인을 제압하고 기내 화재를 수습한 승무원이 시카고 출신 한인 리처드 조(조승현·40·사진) 씨로 밝혀졌다.

조 씨의 아버지 조희장 씨(70)는 8일 연합뉴스와의 통화에서 조 씨가 지난달 5일 그의 ‘영웅적 행동’에 감사의 뜻을 표하는 버락 오바마 미국 대통령의 친서를 전달받았다고 전했다. 오바마 대통령은 친서에서 “대통령으로서 가장 중요한 책임은 국민을 안전하게 지키는 것”이라면서 “승객의 고귀한 생명을 구하고 미국을 지킨 조 씨의 영웅적인 행동을 미국은 영원히 기억할 것이며, 그 헌신과 용기에 진심으로 감사를 표한다”고 밝혔다. 이 편지는 노스웨스트항공을 합병한 델타항공의 최고경영자(CEO)가 지난달 애틀랜타 본부로 조 씨를 초청한 자리에서 전달됐다.

부모를 따라 7세 때 미국에 이민 온 조 씨는 시카고 서북부 교외의 샴버그 고교를 졸업했으며 아이오와주립대에서 정치학과 사회학을 전공한 뒤 노스웨스트항공 승무원으로 일해 왔다. 지난해 성탄절 아침 나이지리아를 출발해 디트로이트 공항에 착륙할 예정이던 노스웨스트항공 253편 여객기에서 알카에다 조직원 우마르 파루크 압둘무탈라브가 폭탄테러를 기도하다 미수에 그쳐 미국인들을 깜짝 놀라게 만들었다.

당시 네덜란드 출신 영화감독 야스퍼르 스휘링아 씨가 폭죽이 터지는 것 같은 소리가 난 뒤 연기가 피어오르는 것을 보고 달려가 범인을 제압해 테러를 방지함으로써 화제가 된 바 있다. 승무원 조 씨는 스휘링아 씨와 함께 범인을 제압한 뒤 폭발물을 감싸고 있던 담요에 옮겨 붙은 불을 기내 소화기 4대를 이용해 신속하고 침착하게 수습함으로써 비행 중이던 여객기에서 큰 화재가 발생하는 것을 막고 승객 278명의 생명을 안전하게 지켜낸 것으로 알려졌다.
